One skiff, piloted by rival Asad, turns around in response, and the other – crewed by four heavily armed pirates led by Abduwali Muse – loses engine power trying to steer through Maersk Alabama 's wake. Knowing that the pirates are listening to radio traffic, he pretends to call a warship, requesting immediate air support. During the drill, the captain notices that the vessel is being followed by Somali pirates in two skiffs, and Phillips calls for help. Wary of pirate activity off the coast of the Horn of Africa, Phillips and First Officer Shane Murphy order strict security precautions on the vessel and carry out a practice drill. Muse chooses a crew for his skiff, including Bilal, an eager teenager, and Elmi, who offers to steer, and the aggressive Najee. Meanwhile, pirates, including a skinny young man named Muse, are ordered to go back to sea. In 2009, Richard Phillips takes command of MV Maersk Alabama, an unarmed container vessel from the Port of Salalah in Oman, with orders to sail through the Guardafui Channel to Mombasa, Kenya. Captain Phillips received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Abdi. The film emerged as a critical and commercial success, receiving positive reviews from critics and grossing $220 million against a budget of $55 million. It premiered at the 2013 New York Film Festival, and was theatrically released on October 11, 2013. Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca served as producers on the project. The screenplay by Billy Ray is based on Phillips's 2010 book A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, which Phillips co-wrote with Stephan Talty. It stars Tom Hanks as Phillips, alongside Barkhad Abdi as pirate leader Abduwali Muse. Based on the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, the film tells the story of the eponymous Captain Richard Phillips, an American merchant mariner who was taken hostage by Somali pirates. He claims that, in the years since, he has never had any nightmares about the clearly traumatizing experience that he survived. "And so I truly believe now that it is important to talk to someone who can help you, and to cry.Captain Phillips is a 2013 American biographical action thriller film directed by Paul Greengrass. And it never happened again after that." It seemed to be a lesson that Phillips valued and was happy to advise others going forward. "For the fourth morning, I woke up at 5 in the morning crying and sobbing like a little baby and I just let it flow for 45 minutes and it ended on its own. ![]() Thankfully, Phillips eventually contacted a SEAL psychologist who assessed his condition, explaining that it was a chemical release the former hostage was going through and perfectly normal. ![]() "2 days after in the movie it shows me crying in the hospital, and the incident actually occurred the 2nd and 3rd night, I would wake up in the night and I had a digital clock so I knew exactly what time it was, and I would be crying, racking and sobbing," Phillips said, recounting the life-changing encounter. Speaking openly about the ordeal in the aforementioned Reddit AMA, Phillips revealed that he didn't break down exactly in the same way as Hanks' version of him did in the film, but the trauma soon kicked after.
